Article ROV pilots wanted 6/25/02 By PAT DOYLE, The Telegram There's an increasing demand for certified pilot/technicians for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and Memorial University's Marine Institute plans to capitalize on the opportunity by developing a new training program which is expected to start in spring 2003. ROVs are used as a substitute or supplement to commercial (manned) diving operations and are especially suited for hazardous and difficult situations. Several sectors use ROVs, including offshore oil and gas, nuclear, military, law enforcement, pipeline and the cable industry. The Marine Institute said the demand for pilot/technicians is increasing throughout Atlantic Canada and the world. "ROV operators are a critical element to the development of deepwater sites offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia," said Capt. Anthony Patterson, director of the institute's Centre for Marine Simulation. "The Marine Institute is developing this program in response to urgent demand from local companies supplying ROV services in this region to have trained and competent ROV pilot/technicians for such deepwater operations." Patterson said the program, to be developed with Pro-Dive Oceaneering, will be open to graduates of electro-mechanics, electronics or marine-engineering diploma programs. He said students will be trained in ROV piloting, hydraulics, electronics, electrical, underwater navigation, ROV launch and recovery operations, and workplace safety, through simulated exercises with specialized ROV facilities, live field training and classroom instruction. The Marine Institute will be the first educational institution in Atlantic Canada to train ROV pilot/technicians for offshore industries, Patterson said. Graduates of the program are expected to land high-paying careers in the large ROV market, he said. According to the Marine Institute, in 2000 there were 446 operational work-class ROVs, an 86 per cent increase over 1997. Information published by the International Marine Contractors Association suggests most offshore ROV personnel are employed directly by contractors on a salary basis, with offshore bonuses. According to the Marine Institute, "ROV work is more consistent than diving work, and seasonal workers are not employed as frequently. ... "ROV pilot/technicians are in high demand and are able to obtain good salaries." As the East Coast oil and gas industry migrates into deep waters, it is expected there will be an increasing requirement for skilled ROV pilot/technicians. "Atlantic Canada, through its various diploma programs in electromechanical, electronics and marine engineering, has an excellent pool of candidates for a ROV pilot/technician training program," the Marine Institute stated in a news release. "The establishment of a training program also establishes an engineering test facility and mission rehearsal capability to support new projects and to reduce the risk of cost overruns. The development of advanced underwater technology, such as autonomous underwater vehicles, can be supported through the ROV training facilities." The institute has promised that its ROV training program will be internationally accepted. |
