The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an international scheme set up to allow young people to learn, to serve others, acquire new skills and experience adventure.

The ATC is an ideal platform from which to complete the award, as the corps has access to all the necessary equipment and expertise to make the award a happy and successful experience. Furthermore, the ATC is the country's largest operating authority of the scheme. Carnforth squadron follows a very active calendar of events regarding the D of E award. At present we have approximately 15 cadets pursuing the bronze award, 5 following the silver and 5 completed their gold award.

In 2002, the Squadron won the Wing D of E trophy because 2246 had achieved more Duke of Edinburgh Awards than any other one in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The award is split into four main sections: a skill, a service, a physical recreation, an expedition and for the gold participants only, a residential project.

The Skill This is where a participant must take up a new skill, and show improvements over either a 3, 6 or 12 month period depending upon their award level. These can range from playing a musical instrument to taking up needle work. Cadets in the squadron have, and are currently doing, the following to attain this part of their award: shooting, classification training and gliding scholarships

The Service This is where the participant must carry out a service to his or her community, again over a varying timescale depending on their award level. Cadets from the squadron have in the past used local fire stations to learn more about fire safety, emergency procedures and equipment. This was an excellent way of giving the cadets a real hands-on approach and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Fortunately, those members of the Air Training Corps who hold a rank will be able to use this as their service.

Physical Recreation For the physical recreation section of the award, the participant must partake in some form of physical activity, as laid down by the D of E, in which they should show commitment and improvement. This can be done in a team sport such as being part of a school team, or it can be done individually by using the physical recreation guidelines set up by the D of E: this includes press-ups, sit-ups, sprinting, stamina run and two quite amusing exercise that go by the names of 'Baily Bridge' and 'Single Leg Thrusts'.

The Expedition The expedition is by far, the best part of the award according to squadron members - a claim supported by a poll that took place on the D of E web-site recently, where two-thirds of the voters said their favourite section of the award was/is the expedition. The Residential This part of the award scheme is for gold participants only and it is where a week must be spent away from home i.e. in a residential environment where the person is given sufficient responsibilities to carry out. This is a five day venture in which friends are made and skills learned. Popular residentials in the past have included places like Youth Hostels and voluntary countryside care groups such as repairing footpath erosion. Within the Air Training Corps, this part of the award can be completed by attending Annual, Easter or an Overseas camp.

This short overview has hopefully gone some way into giving you an insight into the award. Its current status in the employment and education fields is high and is looked on as a key skill and a truly worthwhile attribute. It shows that young people have given up their spare time to pursue something challenging and that allows them to provide a service to their community - bettering themselves in the process.
