Insurer
Refuses To Pay
$1.6 Million In Tiger Woods Yacht
Lawsuit
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --
An insurance company is refusing to pay $1.6
million to
settle a lawsuit between
a shipbuilder and Tiger Woods over use of the
golfer's name and photograph of his luxury yacht "Privacy" to promote
the company.
St. Paul Fire and Marine
Insurance Co. of Minnesota filed its own
lawsuit Thursday in federal court contending that Christensen Shipyards
Ltd. agreed to
the settlement on April
24 without the approval of the insurance
company.
St. Paul is asking a
federal judge to declare that the settlement with
Woods should be paid entirely by Vancouver, Wash.-based Christensen or
that St. Paul's share of the payment be limited to a $1 million cap
cited in its policy with Christensen.
Woods and his wife,
Swedish model Elin Nordegren, sued Christensen in
October 2004 claiming that the shipbuilder had breached its contract by
improperly using the names and images of Woods, his wife and the yacht
for its own commercial gain. The contract said Christensen was not to
publicly disclose the name of the yacht or the yacht's owner.
Christensen's attorney in
Miami, Leslie Lott, did not immediately
return a telephone call seeking comment Friday.
Knowing Woods
the way he is
There are very few men
who redefine the way a sport is played. Tiger
Woods has that distinction and he did that by adding a twist to one of
golf's most basic actions ' the drive. Woods has the longest drive on
the PGA Tour and that gave him a big advantage over his contemporaries.
To counter his dominance, players started copying his technique in an
attempt to raise their game. Golf courses that stood unchanged for
years finally got a facelift because Woods made them feel almost tiny.
Woods has often said, 'I love to compete. That's the essence of who I
am.' Once when he was asked what he meant by that, Tiger added, 'You
and I could be playing cards right now and... I just want to kick your
butt.'
'You'd want to win,'
asked the interviewer. 'No, I want to kick your
butt. There's the difference,' Tiger replied. Tiger who?
Born on December 30,
1975, Woods is the only child to parents Earl, a
retired lieutenant, and Kultida, of Thai descent. Earl Woods gave his
son Eldrick the nickname 'Tiger', after a soldier and friend of his
father who was also nicknamed Tiger in his days as a lieutenant colonel
in the US Army. Have you seen the Nike commercial where Woods bounces
the ball on his club, like Pele toys with a football, before blasting
it off into the stratosphere? The guys doing the advertisement were
shocked with the ease with which Woods accomplished the feat. Again and
again and again every time the producers wanted a retake. Woods
intimidated them just by doing that.
He was once asked whether
he was aware that he intimidated others. 'I'm
aware if I'm playing at my best I'm tough to beat. And I enjoy that,'
Woods had said. Asked what separates great golfers from those who are
just very good, Tiger says, 'To be able to repeat it again and again
and again.' One-woman man
Elin Nordegren is a sexy,
Swedish blonde who's a knockout in a bikini
and to top all that, she's discreet too. What more can a superstar like
Woods want? Nordegren's celebrity status went through the roof after
news of her relationship with Woods was made public in 2002. She and
her twin sister were also working as nannies for Swedish golfer Jesper
Parnevik's children when he introduced her to Woods during the 2001
British Open. The two became engaged after Woods popped the question at
the luxury Shamwari game reserve. The hushed marriage to Woods made
headlines in October 2004. Money, money, money
In June 2005, Forbes
estimated his annual income at US$87 million. That
makes him one of the richest sportsmen in the world. His career
earnings from just golf are a phenomenal $58,255,844. The closest any
other player comes to him is Vijay Singh, with $46,617,643. But then it
ain't all about money
Woods supports several
charities and among them are his own projects as
well. The Tiger Woods Foundation was established in 1996 by him and his
father Earl. It focuses on projects for children. Initially these
comprised golf clinics (aimed especially at disadvantaged children),
and a grant program. Further activities added since then include
university scholarships, an association with Target House at St. Jude
Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee; the Start Something character
development program, which had had over one million participants by
2003; and the Tiger Woods Learning Centre. Tiger Jam, an annual
fund-raising concert and Target World Challenge, an annual off-season
charity golf tournament, are a few other instances where Tiger shows
his human side.
What's he up to now?
